Why authentication matters

Authentication is an expert opinion about whether an autograph or collectible is genuine. Recognized certification, clear provenance and matching item details can strengthen buyer confidence, liquidity and long-term collectibility.

Verify before you buy

  1. Find the hologram, label or certificate number.
  2. Enter it on the authenticator’s official website.
  3. Match the signer, item type and available image.
  4. Inspect the label, holder and item for tampering.
  5. Buy from a seller who provides clear photographs and provenance.

Official certification tools

Fanatics Authentic and UnderWraps

Fanatics says eligible authenticated memorabilia carries an individually numbered, tamper-evident hologram that can be checked online. UnderWraps is Fanatics’ officially licensed mystery-memorabilia program.

MVPs and Beckett

MVPs says it works directly with athletes and that its signed items are verified and authenticated by Beckett. Beckett uses tamper-evident certification labels and searchable digital certification records.

Collector warning signs

  • No readable certification number
  • The database returns a different signer or item type
  • A label appears lifted, cut, replaced or damaged
  • The seller will not provide close-up photographs
  • A certificate number is shown but the item label is missing
  • Stock photographs are used instead of the actual collectible
